OUR STORY:

Every family has a culture, but Deaf-parented households navigate two entire worlds simultaneously.

Over 90% of children born to Deaf adults are hearing. Growing up as a CODA (Child of Deaf Adult) means learning American Sign Language as a native tongue, understanding visual-spatial communication, and experiencing the rich traditions of Deaf culture from infancy.

Yet, it also means walking a line that few outside the community understand. CODAs often act as informal linguistic bridges, navigate complex bicultural identities, and carry unique emotional responsibilities.

Despite the size of this community, mainstream systems—schools, hospitals, and therapy clinics—rarely understand these dynamics. Hear to Sign (HTS) was founded to close that divide. We are turning lived experiences into empirical research, accessible resources, and culturally competent support.

We envision a world where every CODA and Deaf-parented family is understood, supported, and provided with culturally competent care across all stages of life.

We see a future where:

Mental health providers are trained in the nuances of Deaf culture and CODA identity.

Educators recognize and support the linguistic strengths of bicultural households.

CODAs have accessible, validating spaces to process their upbringing and connect with peers.

Deaf parents are empowered with accessible family resources that respect visual language and community heritage.

Lived-Experience First

We believe the best advocacy is led by the people who live it. Every survey, resource, and program we build is directly informed by Deaf parents and CODAs.

Data-Driven Advocacy

Personal stories are vital, but empirical data moves institutions. Through our baseline research initiatives, we generate the statistics needed to change policy, clinical training, and public awareness.

Cultural & Linguistic Integrity

We honor American Sign Language and Deaf culture as foundational assets, not deficits. Our resources are built with cultural respect at the forefront.

Accessible & Inclusive Support

From high-contrast digital tools to plain-language and visual resources, we ensure our support is barrier-free for both Deaf and hearing community members.

501(c)(3) Public Charity

Hear to Sign is a recognized 501(c)(3) tax-exempt non-profit organization.

Community-Accountable: Every donation and grant supports our research initiatives, community toolkits, and provider-education programs. 

Ethical Data Stewardship: All information shared through our studies—including the C.O.D.A. Visibility Study—is handled with strict privacy protocols, anonymized, and used exclusively for public health and advocacy education.

Tax-Deductible Contributions: Donations made to Hear to Sign are fully tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.
